Web Forms & the Web Key
Five ways to get leads from your website into ClientTether — a hosted form, an iframe, two Javascript options and a plain POST — all keyed to your account.
On this page
1What the web key and web forms are
Your account has a web key — a code that identifies it to the outside world. Anything that posts a lead with that key creates a contact in your account. ClientTether gives you four ways to use it, from “no work at all” to “wire up your own form”, all on the Webform Details page (Settings → Webform Details).
2Hosted web forms
The page lists your Hosted WebForms: a Default WebForm, plus one for each lead source you choose to create (Add New WebForm… and pick the source). Each form has a public URL of the form ct.clienttether.com/landing/your-slug, an optional Redirect (where to send people after they submit) and a Page Message shown on the form. View WebForm opens it; Save WebForm Settings stores your changes.
A lead submitted through a source’s form is filed under that source automatically, so the right Connection Plan starts. See Lead Sources.
3Putting a form on your site
| Option | How it works | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| Link | Send people to the hosted form’s URL. | Emails, social posts, QR codes. |
| iframe | Embed the hosted form in a page of your site with the iframe snippet the page gives you (at least 600px wide and about 720px tall). | Sites where you can paste HTML. |
| Easy Javascript | Include ClientTether’s script and name the div that should hold the form; the form renders inside it. | Most sites — but it doesn’t work well on WordPress. |
| Custom Javascript | Include the same script and call submitWebLead(…) from your own form. Phone and email are validated before sending. | Designers who want full control of the form’s look. |
| POST | Have your own form post directly to https://ct.clienttether.com/Api/externalFormLead. | Any system that can make an HTTP POST. |
4POST fields
Only web_key and either a name or a phone or an email are required. The full field list:
| Field | Meaning |
|---|---|
web_key | Your account’s web key (required). |
name | First and last name separated by a space; overrides firstName/lastName if both are sent. |
firstName, lastName | The lead’s names. |
phone | 10-digit phone number. |
email | Email address. |
smsok | 1 if it’s okay to text, 0 if not. Defaults to 1. |
notes | Anything the customer typed. |
addr, city, state, zip | Address; state as the 2-letter abbreviation. |
comp | Company name. |
Texting consent belongs on the form
If you send smsok=1, your form must say so: a visible notice that submitting opts the person in to automated texts, and how to opt out. It’s a carrier requirement for your texting registration — see Telephony & Texting Registration.
5Troubleshooting
Leads stopped arriving
The web key was regenerated on the Lead Sources tab, or a form is posting with the wrong key. Check the API Monitor in the user menu for rejected calls.
The Javascript form is blank on WordPress
Known limitation. Use the iframe option or the hosted form’s link instead.
I don’t see Webform Details in Settings
Your Enterprise has locked lead sources and web forms. Ask the Enterprise account owner.
