Creating Contacts
Adding someone by hand, the fields worth filling in immediately, and the five automatic routes most contacts actually arrive through.
On this page
1Adding a contact by hand
- Open Contacts in the main menu and pick the contact type you want — Clients, Employees, Partners, Vendors, or All. Whatever you pick, the next step is the same.
- Click + Add New at the top left of the list.
- Fill in the contact: type, first and last name, phone, email, address and anything else you have.
- Save. The profile opens and the contact appears in the list.
Accounts with the Add by phone add-on get a second button beside it: enter just a phone number and ClientTether creates the contact from it.
2What’s worth filling in straight away
| Field | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Lead Source | Decides which Connection Plan starts, and where the contact shows in source reporting. See Lead Sources. |
| Sales Cycle | Where the contact sits in your process, and therefore which Pipeline column. A contact with none is a New Lead. |
| Assigned User | Who owns the contact. Salesperson users only see contacts assigned to them. |
| OK to SMS? | Must be on before any text can be sent — and only with the contact’s consent. See Texting (SMS). |
| Action Plan | Start follow-up immediately, or leave it for later. |
| Tags | Free-form labels that filters and triggers read. See Tags. |
3The other ways contacts arrive
Typing them in is the exception. Most contacts arrive automatically:
- Web forms and Hosted Pages on your website.
- The Email Parser, for sources that only send email.
- Marketplace integrations — Thumbtack, Angi, HomeAdvisor and others.
- The API, for your own systems.
- Importing a spreadsheet.
4Troubleshooting
I saved the contact but no follow-up started
No action plan was attached, or the lead source has no Connection Plan. Set one from the profile, or bulk-set from the list with Change.
ClientTether says the contact already exists
Duplicate checking is on for the account. Open the existing record rather than creating a second one.
